Sharon Center School's cafeteria has been an especially busy place this week as we collaborated with members of the extended community to celebrate CT Grown for CT Kids Week. Throughout the week, students will learn about where our foods come from. They will also have the opportunity to taste test and provide feedback on farm fresh items in our cafeteria. In addition, we kicked off the week with some special events.
On Monday, we welcomed RFarm from Burlington, CT. They taught about bees and honey and brought samples for students to enjoy. State Representative Maria Horn was able to time her visit to see students in the cafeteria taste testing honey and other farm fresh treats.
On Tuesday we welcomed Kim Hughes, our Regional Farm-to-School Coordinator, and Fionnuala Brown from CSDE's Bureau of Child Nutrition Programs. Students looked at seeds and did some planting in the cafeteria.
This week provides an excellent connection to the books of author Nancy Castaldo, who is visiting Region One and speaking with students about her book, The Farm That Feeds Us, in early November.
